A Prayer for Guidance When You Don't Know What to Do

Ask God for wisdom, patience and courage while you consider Scripture, wise counsel and responsible next steps.

When you do not know what to do

A difficult decision can make every option feel heavy. You may sincerely want to honour God and still lack clarity. You do not need to manufacture certainty or prove that you can hear God correctly. Bring the real decision, your motives and your fears to Him through Jesus.

Begin with what God has already made clear

“Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.”

Psalm 119:105 (WEBPB)

Scripture has authority. It reveals God's character, centres us on Christ and makes many matters of faithfulness clear. Personal impressions, dreams, visions, words, feelings and prophetic encouragement do not have equal authority with Scripture. They should be prayerfully weighed against it, and an impression that contradicts Scripture should not be followed.

Where Scripture does not command one particular option, Christians can sometimes make a wise decision without extraordinary revelation. Guidance may involve prayer, accurate information, patience, circumstances, ordinary decision-making and wise Christian counsel. A special sign, dream or feeling of peace is not required for every decision.

Ask God for wisdom

“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

James 1:5 (WEBPB)

God welcomes our request for wisdom without shaming us for needing it. This promise does not mean an immediate supernatural answer is guaranteed for every choice. Wisdom may grow as we obey what is clear, gather reliable information, listen to correction and wait when waiting is responsible.

Pray

A prayer

Father, You see the decision before me and the uncertainty I feel. I want to honour You, but I do not know what to do. Thank You that I can come through Jesus and ask for wisdom without pretending to be certain.

Ground me in Scripture and help me obey what You have already made clear. Give me humility to seek accurate information, patience to wait when I should, and courage to act when responsible wisdom allows it. Bring wise counsel that helps without controlling me, and make me willing to receive correction.

Protect me from being ruled by fear or treating every thought and feeling as Your command. Give me discernment, freedom from pressure and trust when the future remains uncertain. Whatever I decide, help me walk faithfully with Christ in the next step. Amen.

Practical steps while you seek direction

  1. State the decision clearly. Separate the actual choice from every possible future worry.
  2. Return to Scripture. Identify what God has commanded and where He has left room for wisdom.
  3. Gather reliable information. Learn what you need in order to choose responsibly.
  4. Invite wise counsel. Listen to mature Christians who will not claim control over your decision.
  5. Allow ordinary wisdom. If either option can honour God, you may be free to choose without waiting for a sign.

If the decision concerns safety, abuse, coercion, legal matters, serious health needs or major financial consequences, prayer does not replace appropriate professional advice or safety support. No pastor, spouse, leader, parent or other authority automatically speaks for God.

Questions for reflection

  • What decision are you actually trying to make?
  • Has Scripture already made any part of the decision clear?
  • What reliable information do you still need?
  • Who could offer wise counsel without controlling the decision?

Trusting God when the answer is still unclear

Not having a clear answer yet does not mean God has abandoned you. Your confidence rests in His character and in Jesus, not in your ability to interpret every circumstance perfectly. Keep walking in what is clear, remain teachable and entrust the unknown future to Him.
